[mpisgmedia] [swing] homeless survey by Housing & Land Rights NGO

remember the survey of 2000 by in-house NGO of
multi-national Action Aid called ashray adhikar
abhiyan (shelter rights campaign)? diverting attention
from 15,00,000 persons / 3,00,000 plots backlog on
statutory EWS housing target, they went gung-ho about
1,00,000 pavement dwellers (and have made that simple
problem tiresome to solve with their irritating
histrionics). now housing & land rights network has
super-specialised the problem to 10,000 homeless
women. hard-right swing for sure!

City yet to build shelters for homeless

- By Our Correspondent
New Delhi, Jan. 15: Of nearly one lakh homeless people
in Delhi only 6,200 are lucky enough to get shelters
provided by the civic authorities. Unfortunately the
remaining 94 per cent of the total homeless population
are yet to receive any help from the civic
authorities.
Concerned over this disturbing status, a human rights
groups has demanded urgent measures to improve the lot
of the shelterless, especially women and children, who
are more vulnerable to physical and sexual violence.
"At present there are only 12 permanent shelters, 16
temporary shelters, four porta cabins and 22 temporary
tents available for use by Delhi's homeless, which
together offer accommodation to 6,200 individuals,"
said a report compiled by Housing and Land Rights
Network. "There are about 10,000 homeless women in
Delhi. But there are only three shelters available for
them with maximum capacity of accommodating only about
100 or just 1 per cent of their population," the
report reveals.
"Although the state of being homeless presents an
undeniably harsh and unforgiving reality for anyone,
especially during the winter months," the report
further states and adds that "it is women and children
who tend to experience more acutely the adverse
impacts of the lack of adequate shelter. Homeless
women are not only exposed to the increased risk of
illness and starvation associated with life on the
streets, but also heightened vulnerability to physical
and sexual violence."
Blaming the apathetic attitude of the MCD, NDMC and
the Delhi government it said, that they are
characterised by a state of general disrepair, and are
grossly inadequate
