Centre sidesteps land law problem to push Urban Mission
Saturday January 21 2006 00:00 IST

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra and West Bengal may have put a spanner in the
Centre's plan to get the urban land ceiling laws repealed, but the Urban
Development Ministry has sidestepped the problem and is going ahead with
its plans to set up a panel of consultants that could give tips to the
states on city development... "The country has a sufficient number of
experts who can be put on the Central panel of consultants from which the
states can choose their own consultants."

Before accessing funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal
Mission, the 63 cities identified for the project will have to put in
place their own City Development Plan (CDP)-integrating land use with
services, urban transport and environment management. The minister,
however, said no funds have been disbursed from the Rs 50,000 crore JNNURM
yet.
