[mpisgmedia] Mumbai outruns Delhi in development race

New Delhi, Feb 16 : Seven cities, including Mumbai, have outrun the
*national* capital in the race for Central funding of their development
projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru *National **Urban **Renewal **Mission*
(JNNURM) launched in December, last year by Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh.

Faced with what is seen as an ageing infrastructure, long planning
delays and capacity shortages, Delhi has yet to sumbmit its city
development plan (CDP) to the Centre in order to receive funds for
development under the JNNURM, an *Urban* Development Ministry Official
said.

But Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Bhopal, Ujjain, Indore and Jabalpur have
responded quickly to the requirement of filing their CDPs with the
*Urban* Development Ministry to be eligible for Central funding, he said.

Union Minister of State for *Urban* Development Ajay Maken, who himself
belongs to the capital, refused to comment on the Delhi government's
pace of response to the initiative, billed as one of the ruling
Congress' key accomplishments.

Less than Rs 500 crore are available for projects under the JNNURM
during the current fiscal.

The Centre will release its 50 per cent of share toward the costs only
after states contribute the other half for projects under the scheme.

The Delhi government yesterday held its first meeting to chalk out the
city development plan for the capital under the *Mission*, and senior
officials were directed to shortlist the areas that needed to be
focussed on here.
