MUMBAI, APRIL 14: Within four months of its inception, the country’s most
prestigious urban development project, the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission (JNNURM) project is on the fast lane. As many as 23 projects
across eight cities have already been approved till March 31, 2006.
According to urban development ministry sources, in addition to these
project, 16 city development plans (CDPs) have already been appraised by
National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) and National Institute of Public
Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and several others are in the pipeline.

Work on development of detailed project reports in several cities is also in
full swing. The cities that have been appraised or in the process being
appraised are Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Vishakhapatnam, Ahmedabad, Rajkot,
Surat, Vadodara, Raipur, Madurai, Coimbatore, Ajmer-Pushkar, Bhopal, Indore,
Jabalpur, Ujjain, Greater Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Jaipur.

Clearly, western and southern states have shown a more focused approach to
the mission compared to cities in other parts of the country.

The CDP is treated as the central element in implementing the

JNNURM project since this acts as a vision document for the city, along with
the memorandum of agreement — a tripartite agreement to be signed by the
Centre, state and the urban local body.

The nodal agencies NIPFP and NIUA have expressed their general satisfaction
over the quality of CDPs given the time constraint and budget.

..................
The project aims to create productive, efficient, equitable and responsive
cities. The three main components of the project are infrastructure, basic
services to urban poor and wide ranging urban sector reforms.
