World class city' still a distant dream
Highly placed sources informed that while urban centres like Mumbai, Pune,
Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Ujjain, Bangalore, Hyderabad and other cities had
submitted their city development and Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for
various projects they plan to undertake under this new initiative, Delhi is
still far away from this exercise despite being sounded well in advance. The
Delhi Government is still in the process of appointing consultants and had
recently come up with a new initiative "Mission Mode" for developing modern
infrastructure in the run-up to the Commonwealth Games. It is estimated that
nearly Rs. 100,000 crores worth of funds are at stake under the Urban
Development Ministry of which major cities have already submitted plans
ranging between Rs. 25,0000 to 40,000 crores.
