VIJAYAWADA: The issue of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission
(JNNURM) continued to rock the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.

The CPM corporators stalled the council meeting on the issue on Monday,
forcing Mayor T Sakuntala to adjourn the council in the forenoon.

The CPM corporators, led by floor leader Ch Babu Rao, raised the issue and
alleged that the VMC had sent the proposals for JNNURM without getting an
approval from the council.

They alleged that the proposals contained several anti-people measures like
the fixing of water meters.

They did not yield to the Mayor's request that the issue of JNNURM could be
discussed later and demanded that the discussion be taken up immediately.

The Mayor had to adjourn the meeting for 10 minutes. There were heated
arguments between the CPM and the CPI corporators, with CPI floor leader P
Gowtham Reddy accusing the CPM of trying to sow confusion in the minds of
the people on JNNURM to get political mileage.

Earlier, as the council meeting started, CPM corporator D Kasinath raised
the issue of irregularities in the teachers' transfers. The Congress
corporators retaliated by accusing the CPM of trying to blackmail the
officials.

Meanwhile, CPM corporator B Sattibabu repeatedly interrupted the council
proceedings forcing an exasperated Mayor to suspend him from the House. The
corporator refused to leave the House. Soon, the Mayor adjourned the House
sine die.

She later held prolonged discussions with the floor leaders of various
parties and resumed the meeting at 3 pm.

The Mayor accused the CPM leaders of trying to disrupt the proceedings by
adopting a non-cooperative attitude. She told reporters that the CPM
corporators were degrading the prestige of the Council.

Clarifying on the JNNURM, she said the officials had sent draft proposals on
city development plan to the Central Government to ensure that the funds to
be released under this project for the year 2005-2006 would not lapse.

Deputy mayor Ch Krishna Kumar too condemned the attitude of CPM corporators.
He said the CPM leaders were creating confusion among people on JNNURM
funds.
