Commonwealth Games: Is Delhi Game for 2010?

...
Delhi has much to learn from the last three Olympics
that took place in Barcelona, Athens and Sydney. Each
of these cities conceived their events with a specific
theme. Barcelona used the Olympics to do urban renewal
and sea front developments in a tightly managed urban
design framework. Athens aimed at rejuvenating their
cultural heritage and Sydney, in a farsighted move,
declared their Olympics ?Green Olympics? with Green
Peace as lead consultants. All these three cities also
geared up to meet the massive demand on entertainment
tourism that followed the sports events. Does Delhi
have a theme?
...
This time we must seize the opportunity to enhance
Delhi's unique personality based on its enormous green
spaces and water bodies, invaluable architectural
heritage, vibrant contemporary art and culture scene,
the traditional crafts that lie embedded in the now
infamous ''mixed use'' areas, and above all its
flamboyant entrepreneurial mindset. There is no way
the government can single-handedly ready the sports
infrastructure and also prepare the city to receive
the Games gracefully within the next three years. The
artists, the tourism sector, the traders, the banks,
ordinary citizens all have to be co-opted in its
preparation, though the slums on the river and the
small shops have got a raw deal. Delhi will also have
to come alive in the nights as thousands of athletes
and spectators would descend on the city, once the
Games get over, looking for all kinds of fun. Let us
not forget, Delhi's thriving counterfeit industry,
criminals, pick-pockets and hustlers also would be in
business and the police would have to gear up with
roundthe-clock vigil in a well-lit city. Meanwhile,
Delhi's planners would also have to make some
quickfooted moves to factor in the Commonwealth Games
into the coming Plan. Or, should we have a special
short-term plan with better peoples participation
within the new Master Plan leading to the Games?

The Commonwealth Games is not a mere technical problem
to be planned in closed boardrooms and on the drawing
boards. It is a colossal Cultural Project that can
transform the city. Anyway one thing is sure; for the
Commonwealth Games to succeed, it has to be an
enterprise of all of Delhi?s citizens.
