Rohini house collapse exposes the cracks
... As a double-storey building collapsed with a thud
near Avantika Chowk in Rohini on Saturday morning, it
sent across a grim reminder of the threat that
residents here face from rampant illegal construction
and commercialisation of residential properties.
Several buildings here have developed cracks and a
tragedy can strike any moment
...High Court-appointed court commissioner Rakesh
Khanna, who inspected the spot, identifed at least
seven buildings in the area that are dangerous.
Asserting that this mishap could have been avoided,
Khanna said it was the job of MCD engineers to keep a
track of such buildings.
MCD's deputy commissioner (Rohini Zone) G S Matharoo
has sought a report on the collapse of the building at
A-307, which was built in the 1980s. He said it would
not be possible to simply go out and demolish all
unauthorised cosntructions that look dangerous as the
Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act makes it clear
that any pre-Janaury 1, 2006, construction has to be
spared action for now...
