AWARENESS PROGRAMME ON URBAN RENEWAL MISSION

A three-day workshop from 20-22 July 2006 is being organized to
sensitise State Government officials and media on Jawaharlal Nehru
National Urban Renewal Mission at Yashwantrao Chavan Academy of
Development Administration (YASHADA) at Pune. The Commissioners and
Additional Commissioners of 10 cities of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and
Rajasthan are participating in the awareness programme. The
Maharashtra Housing & Development Authority is also attending.

The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing & Urban
Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja will be inaugurating the training
programme. The Minister will interact with the Municipal functionaries
of the participating States on various issues of the National Urban
Renewal Mission.

Municipal functionaries from Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Mumbai, Vadodara,
Jaipur, Nanded, Amravati, Aurangabad, Panaji and Nasik are
participating in the workshop.

The workshop will disseminate information about the Jawaharlal Nehru
National Urban Renewal Mission and about various schemes with a view
to enhance capacity building of the officials of the implementing
agencies. It will train the officials on structure and implementation
of the various programmes meant for the urban poor, to sensitise the
State Government authorities on various reforms enumerated in the
Urban Renewal Mission and to enable the participants understand
technical concepts like financial viability of each project and
environmental and social impact of the projects. The three-day
programme will also help the state functionaries on how to prepare
city development plans and detailed project reports. The workshop will
also deal with the detail of the community participation and for
efficient deliverying of basic services to the urban poor.

As you are aware that the Jawaharlal National Urban Renewal Mission
was launched on the 3rd of December 2005 by the Prime Minister Dr.
Manmohan Singh in New Delhi to build and renew urban infrastructure in
63 selected cities across the country. The total allocation for the
mission is Rs. 50,000 Crore to be spent in seven years by the Central
Government and an equal amount will be spent in this period by the
State Governments and the Urban Local Bodies. The mission has two sub
missions – one deals with urban infrastructure and Governance and the
second sub-mission focuses with basic services for urban poor.

The basic services for urban poor is being implemented by the Union
Ministry for Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation. The sub-mission one
is being implemented by the Union Ministry of Urban Development.

Shri Ratnakar Gaikwad, Director General, YASHADA; Shri Pankaj Jain,
Joint Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation and
Mrs. V. Radha, Director, SIUD will be present.
