*Pune, August 31:* THE proposal to appoint architect Narendra Panse as
project management consultant for slum rehabilitation projects under the
Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission has run into controversy.
Muncipal Commissioner Nitin Kareer had forwarded the proposal for Panse's
appointment to the civic Standing Committee. However, Bharatiya Janata Party
leader and leader of opposition Anil Shirole has opposed the appointment.
''Tenders should have been invited for such a huge project,'' he said.
[image: Advertisement] But Kareer maintained that under the Jawaharlal
Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission project, it was not necessary to invite
tenders for appointing a consultant.
''Moreover, Panse is on the panel of Pune Municipal Corporation's
architects. He is an architect from Omkara Associates,'' he stated.
In a rejoinder, Shirole said that Panse was not on the panel.
''The official list of empanelled architects shows 30 associations and their
architects but nowhere it features the name of Narendra Panse or Omkara
associates,'' he said, pointing to the list.
Shirole has demanded that the Pune Municipal Corporation now issue an
'Expression of Interest' advertisement.
''For a huge project like slum rehabilitation, we need more expertise. By
issuing an expression of interest, architects from all over the country will
be able to submit their reports on the project and also offer their
expertise,'' he said.
