*Ahmedabad, october 3:* Under the ambitious Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban
Renewal Mission (JNURM) of the Central government, the State government has
got 21 of its submitted projects approved. This is the highest number of
projects approved for any state under JNURM with Andhra Pradesh getting 19
projects okayed and Maharashtra 17.

These 21 projects worth Rs 784 crore have been given the go-ahead under
Urban Infrastructure and Governance (UIG) category of JNURM. The State
Government had submitted 61 projcts under this catergory. The proposals are
related to infrastructure projects in Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot and Surat.

Under the second category — Basic Services to Urban Poor (BSUP), the
government had submitted two projcts worth Rs 154.9 crore and both of them
have been approved by the Ministry of Urban Development, Government of
India.

Of the Rs 784 crore under UIG, the Central government would contribute
around Rs 343.82 crore while remaining amount of expenses would be shared by
the State government and urban local bodies (ULB). And of the total
projects, Ahmedabad gets projects worth Rs 350 crore, Surat Rs 220 crore,
Rajkot Rs 161 crore, and Vadodara Rs 41 crore.

On the other hand, the two projects under BSUP are related to construction
of low-cost housing for urban poor in Ahmedabad and Surat. Under the
Ahmedabad project worth Rs 98.5 crore, around 8,000 single-room flats would
be constructed by AUDA. Under the Surat project worth Rs 56.4 crore, 5,760
flats would be built by SMC.

According to State Urban Development Department, these two housing projects
for urban poor are the first to be approved under JNNRUM in the country.
''These two were the first to be approved by the Ministry of Urban
Development of the Central government,'' said a senior official.

Besides, the Central government has sanctioned nine water supply schemes for
nine towns under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and
Medium Towns (UIDSSMT). These schemes worth Rs 61 crore would be implemented
in Kheda, Mehsana, Kadi, Godhra, Radhanpur, Himatnagar, Prantij,
Surendranagar and Valsad. UIDSSMT is part of JNNRUM for small and medium
