Bus rapid transit lane to run on median

BANGALORE: The dedicated bus rapid transit track proposed on the Outer Ring
Road (ORR) would be designed on the centre of the carriage-way along one
stretch. A decision about the positioning of the bus lane was taken at a
recent meeting of the high level committee on traffic management.

A feasibility report of the project, which was a part of the Chief
Minister's 10-point programme for streamlining traffic in the city, will be
conducted by the Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Ltd.

"We have to prepare a detailed project report. We were deliberating on the
question of whether the lane would run along the side of the road or in the
centre. The committee has decided that it will be in the centre," IDECK
Chairman V P Baligar told this website's newspaper.

The bus rapid transit system has been envisaged as a system of dedicated
busways that have their own rights-of-way, bus services that utilise lanes
and dedicated expressways and limited stop buses on pre-existing routes.

According to Baligar, the bus lane is being designed for the ORR stretch
between Central Silk Board and Hebbal. As of now, the idea is to have the
bus lane on the median, but the details have to be worked out. "First, a
survey of these areas will have to be carried out," he said.

Baligar said that the decision to design the bus lane on the median was
taken after considering expert advice. Apparently, this was the preferred
system in many cities across the world.
