Well, Scotus, you have a way with words...and you're not bad with ideas either.
I enjoyed your comments re: narrative and responses. I have may posted this
at some earlier time (short term memory goes with middle age), but it is
worth a second time. Sartre, in speaking of Giacometti's sculpture made the
following comment: "He knows what he tried to do and we don't, but we know
what he did and he doesn't...and ours is the final word." (Sartre, "Essays in
Aesthetics," "The Quest for the Absolute") He went on to say that what
seemed to bother Alberto the most was that his sculptures had begun to make a
social life of their own...far from him. "But we will brush him aside, carry
everything in his studio away, even the plaster that covers his floor...he know
s this; his cowed manner betrays him." This was written, prophetically, in
1941 or 42. On a personal note: I have found it a thing of joy to have
critics, patrons, or the viewing public find aspects to my work of which I was
unaware. It seems the things that we make are much more complex than we
imagine.
