Ibrahim Ballouz suggested Diana Agrest's essay "On the notion of place"
as a source for a clear definition of "place." Upon following this
suggestion and skimming the essay, I must say it seemed far from
"clear" to me, rather opaque actually. (I've actually found this a
difficulty with much architectural theorizing, which seems to have
adopted the semiotician's delight in purposeful obscurity. Perhaps
it's my upbringing in computer science and cognitive psychology.)

Though not providing a succinct definition of "place," I've found the
following two books accessible and thought-provoking:

Walter, E. V. (1988). Placeways. Chapel Hill, NC: U. North Carolina
Press.

Hiss, T. (1990). The experience of place. New York: Vintage Books.

I'm also know that David Seamon has written extensively about "place";
anyone familiar with this work care to comment?
