I'd say it kinda depends on the relationship. If the client is a first-
timer, you can try to bring them around (client education), if your
position is based on research and is rational, or if you are very
persuasive. If the client is established and friendly, it may be stickier,
but the client should know how you feel anyway.

You, as the designer, ALWAYS have the option of refusing the commission if
you feel you can't do it in good conscience, but, of course, if you don't
take the job, someone else will.

An example might be William McDonough, the architect who was hired to
"green-up" Wal-Mart. Technically, this is "sleeping with the enemy," as
McD. doesn't do anything about the nasty stuff Wal-Marts do to small-town
economies, but by allying with them, he has seen to it that the ENVIRONMENTAL
impact of a 200,000sf retail building is reduced to something near a
tolerable level (of course, better yet not to have the damned things to begin
with, but that would be "un'murrican," wouldn't it?)
