The Los Angeles Forum for Architecture and Urban Design
is a relatively new element in the arena of discussions about architecture
in Los Angeles, and hosts two or three series of typically thought-provoking
speaker presentation/discussions annually. The Forum meets at the Schindler
House, 835 N. Kings Road, (213.852.7145) on Monday evenings at 8 p.m. for
the duration of the series. Each event is free to members and $7 for
non-members; all are welcome.

The theme for the 1995 summer series is
Natural Productions: Landscape and Nature in the City
1. June 19 Mike Davis
Cannibal City: Los Angeles and the Destruction of Nature
Mike Davis is an urban and environmental historian and author of the
acclaimed book City of Quartz. He is currently finishing his next book on
Los Angeles for Verso about the ordeal of the city through recession,
trial, fire, flood, and earthquake. He teaches at Sci-Arc and USC.
2. June 26 Walter Hood
Human Ecology in Cities
Walter Hood, trained as both landscape architect and architect, has been
widely published and his designs widely exhibited and praised for their use
of community concerns as a creative departure for producing new, powerful
urban landscapes. He is currently an Assistant Professor at UC Berkeley
and has taught at Harvard's Graduate School of Design.
3. July 10 Lewis MacAdams and Stephen Callis
Notes from Upstream: Navigating the L.A. River
Lewis MacAdams is an author of eleven books of poems and stories including
"News from Ninian Farm" and "Africa and the Marriage of Walt Whitman and
Marilyn Monroe." He also co-produced and co-directed the documentary film
"What Happened to Kerouac." He co-founded The Friends of the L.A. River in
1985 and serves as president of the 2000 member organization.
Stephen Callis is a Los Angeles based photographer whose work includes
photo-essays on flood control and real estate development of the L.A. River
Watershed. He teaches at Otis College of Art and Design.
4. July 17 William Fain
A Greenway Plan for Metropolitan Los Angeles
William Fain is a principal of the firm Johnson Fain and Pereira and
principal designer of A Greenway Plan for Metropolitan Los Angeles which
envisions a four hundred mile linear, public open space system of parks and
recreation space.
5. July 24 Kim Abeles
The Smog Collector
Kim Abeles is an artist renown for provocative work concerning political,
cultural, and environmental issues. She recently had a retrospective at
the Santa Monica Museum of Art. She is a fellow of the Getty Trust Fund
and the Pollack-Krasner Foundation.
6. July 31 Gary Strang
Architecture of the Working Landscape
Gary Strang is an architect and landscape architect practicing in San
Francisco and teaching at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. His theoretical work
and installations investigate the impact of infrastructure on the built and
natural landscape.
7. August 7 Pamela Burton
Civil Landscapes
Pamela Burton, ASLA, is principal of the Santa Monica firm Pamela Burton &
Co. For over twenty years, her firm has created public and private spaces
which explore the boundries between landscapes and gardens.
