Position: Artist/Teacher
Organization Description
Children's Studio School is a 19-year-old community-based institution with
national recognition for its transcultural Arts-As-Educationc approach to
developing multidimensional thinking in children. Believing that the younger
the child, the more developed his/her teacher should be, the Studio School
employs mature visual and performing artists, architects and writers of
diverse cultural backgrounds, all respected professionals in their
disciplines, to teach three- to nine-year olds throughout the day as a total
means of education. As the children work through the intense process of
investigating concepts and ideas in art, they naturally draw upon their
cultural histories and develop superior capabilities in all academic areas.
The school stimulates divergent ways of thinking and solving problems in
participants of all ages through its internship residencies for teachers,
artists, and college students; and through workshops, conferences, and
performances for families, teachers, and others in the community. Children's
Studio School has just been designated DC's first public Charter School --
and the only arts and humanities school of its kind in the country. Once a
building is found, the school will open in the fall of 1997.
Position Description
Artists/teachers guide very young children in the artist's processes of
active investigating, discovery, creating, experimenting, constructing and
critiquing by working in and through the visual and performing arts,
architecture and writing as an in-depth and all-encompassing means of
education. The position includes comprehensive curriculum development and
meticulous organization and documentation of children's studio work.
Artists/teachers also conduct professional development workshops for public
school teachers, diversity workshops and summer employment/assistantships for
teens, and participate in artistic and educational collaborations with
families and other cultural organizations and institutions.
Requirements
The qualified artist/teacher must: love inquiry, discourse, chronicling; be
organized, mature, and inventive; have an experiential understanding of
Children's Studio School approach to developing transcultural polydimensional
thinking in children; and be able to create and implement a rich
comprehensive alternative curriculum in the arts to ensure children's
achievement of high academic capabilities. Preferred applicants will also
have: a graduate degree and extensive working experience an artistic
discipline, university teaching experience, and excellent writing ability.
Roots in African/Latino/Asian/Native American cultures an asset.
Capabilities in either exhibit preparation, installation, bookmaking,
design, and/or film/video are also desirable.
