Stolen Oslo masterpieces were uninsured

Oslo, Norway, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Two paintings by Edvard Munch stolen during the weekend from an Oslo art gallery were not insured against theft, The Times of London reported Monday.

Two masked and armed men snatched "The Scream" and "Madonna," both painted in 1893 from the gallery Sunday.

"I imagine that the thieves might have been hoping it was insured so that they could try to claim any kind of reward money put up by the insurance company," said Sarah Jackson, the historic claims director of the Art Loss Register. "That is obviously not going to happen now. We will have to wait and see whether they are going to try to extort some kind of ransom."

Knut Forsberg, the manager of Blomqvist Fine Arts, Norway's oldest auction house, provisionally valued "The Scream" at between $87 million and $105 million. The pastel painting is one of four versions of the same image -- a white-faced figure on a bridge against a blood-red sky, clutching its cheeks as its mouth gapes open in a horrified scream.

The Munch Museum has 1,100 paintings, 3,000 drawings and 18,000 etchings, including two of the four versions of "The Scream."
