"The Biggest Draw: Why People Draw"

The extraordinary power of drawing in art, design and everyday life will be celebrated in an exhibition to be held at the Millennium Galleries, Sheffield from 15 September - 15 December 2004. The Biggest Draw will bring together over 100 works from a number of public and private collections including the V&A, The British Museum and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The Biggest Draw is part of the National Campaign for Drawing, an initiative founded by the Guild Of St George in 2000, with the basic aim to get everyone drawing.
Visitors will be captivated by a stunning display of drawings by artists and designers spanning the ages, including works by old masters such as Holbien and Rembrandt alongside 2003 Turner Prize winning Grayson Perry. The range and breadth of drawing will be displayed through engineering drawings, architectural plans, courtroom drawings, aboriginal drawings, graffiti and a specially commissioned drawing by contemporary artists Neil Conroy and Lesley Sanderson. The works will demonstrate the relevance, diversity and expressive power of drawing both historically and in contemporary society.
The exhibition will comprise of 3 sections brought together to unravel the reasons why people draw: Looking, Expressing and Designing. Studies of nature, people and architecture will be included in the first section, looking at how drawings are used to explore the world. The second section will focus on how drawing explores imagination and identity, telling stories and depicting dreams and memories. The final section will look specifically at drawing as a communication tool used to develop ideas and concepts, including design for textiles and stained glass. Throughout the exhibition examples of unexpected methods of drawings will be displayed, challenging the traditional perception of drawing.
The Biggest Draw will be supplemented by a number of workshops, talks, trails and events to mark the Yorkshire launch of the Campaign for Drawings' Big Draw 2004.
