Re: [design] Versailles, sigh

to me this image is striking: Horace Trumbauer -
Remains of the Portico of Whitemarsh Hall - 2002.11.25
http://www.quondam.com/12/1140.htm

and i previously thought of lutyens when seeing
the lions gate (i think it was). there is so much
to it (i imagine especially if it is local and the
stories/buildings are living) it is hard to know
where to begin. it is almost surreal, yet maybe
not if it is the known fabric. it appears palatial.
neoclassical ruins. not even industrial, the type
that english gardens would construct as follies,
yet in a .us suburban landscape (ideal garden city?).
i wonder about the archaeological dimensions of it.

You would hope (Philadelphian) Robert Venturi knows of Whitemarsh Hall--interesting how
Venturi makes much of Lutyens, yet virtually nothing of Trumbauer, who is Lutyens' almost exact contemporary. And let's not forget African-American architect Julian Abele, who is seen as near equal with Trumbauer when it comes to executing the design of Whitemarsh Hall.
