MH's nazism is a compound problem: as the proverb of
fashion has it: "Evil is one thing, stupid is unforgivable."
Lowith asks him how he can associate with likes of
Striecher,...MH puts him off with a Kissinger type cynicism....
Setting aside the question of "beyond good & evil",
how does one explain this, H's membership in a party of bombastic boors,
fools,degenerates, sociopaths, lumpen, ciphers...with no scintilla of
cultural/intellectual authenticity.
There's the image of the Professor in "Blue Angel" , but there
has never seemed to me anything of infatuation in H's behavior
on this point. Rather one senses a mental reservation.
As with the referred response to the mag interviewer that he became
a Nazi to counter the "iron cage" trend of Western Civ., MH was
a liar. And if his ideological integrity is suspect, what of his philosophical?
