Pune, May 17: Prominent citizens who had come to discuss the Pune Municipal
Corporation's City Development Plan, on Wednesday underlined the need for
inclusion of stronger policies pertaining to roads and traffic, urban
housing for poor and middle class and people's participation in the CDP.

The view was expressed at a panel discussion organised by Bharatiya Janata
Party's Vijay Kale. Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture
(MCCIA) president Ravi Pandit, architect Vishwas Kulkarni, Indian Institute
of Architecture president Prakash Deshmukh and builder Hemant
Naiknanawarewere the panelists.

Kulkarni said the CDP lacked a clear vision for the future and it
highlighted how existing problems could be solved. He recommended that a
Pune metropolitan regional authority be formed, besides modifications in the
Development Control rules for energy conservation and protection of
environment and single window system for developmental projects. Naiknaware
said that the PMC land acquisition policy needed to be strengthened. ''PMC's
decision to implement mass rapid transport project in 2008-09 under the
JNURM is wrong. It needs to be addressed before implementation of the DP in
2007,'' he said.

Deshmukh said Pune needed an integrated plan for developing road network. He
called for formation of 'Pune City Development Task Force' at ward-level,
comprising politicians, citizens, civic officers and experts.
