Dear Sir,

This is apropos the article ?New Delhi: Story IV ? Road Royale? carried in the Delhi Newsline of the Indian Express on Friday, 28 July ?06.
(online link: http://cities.expressindia.com/fullstory.php?newsid=194487)

Of the people quoted, Mr. M. M. Rana, Mr. Ratish Nanda and Mr. A.G.K. Menon are referred to as conservation architects.

Heritage conservation and management is a specialized sector distinct from general architectural practice. It is realized that architectural education offered at the Undergraduate level is oriented towards modern requirements and does not train professionals to address the challenges of conserving built heritage. Therefore, there are further specializations at Masters Level, nationally and internationally, to train professionals only for conservation purposes.

By this virtue, a conservation architect is an architect who has further specialized in conservation of built heritage, and applies only to Mr. Ratish Nanda.

Both Mr. Rana and Mr. Menon may belong to the rare category of enthusiastic architects who have voluntarily oriented themselves to the concerns of heritage and may be appreciated for the same.

Nonetheless, for the sake of professional propriety, it is inappropriate to call them conservation architects. You are requested to take note of the fact and help us maintain the dignity of our profession.

Yours truly,

Shubhru Gupta
Conservation Architect, and
Member, Conservation Architects Society, CONSARCHS (Regd)
