Virtual Palette Artists' Network

The purpose of the Virtual Palette Artists' Network (VPANET) is to
empower artists with telecommunications technology. The network was
originally set up as a computer bulletin board system in 1991.

With the development of sophisticated mail routing software, the
ability to echo the art oriented conferences to other BBS systems is a
very simple process. This ability will enable artists from a larger
geographical area to exchange information and ideas. We hope that it
will also serve to encourage more artists to join the online
community.

The VPANET does not depend on public funding for its existense;
instead, it relies on the good will and enthusiasm of BBS system
operators (SYSOPS) to carry its conferences on their local systems.
These conferences are then available be echoed to other systems - in a
similar fashion to the Internet, a network of academic and commercial
computer systems.

In addition, the Virtual Palette depends on the participation and
commitment of the artists who make use of the network. Since artists
are naturally endowed with creative energy, the potential for
discovering innovative outlets for artistic expression would seem
promising.

The value of the network to participating artists is more than just
the ability to exchange information. It is hoped that the system will
open new markets for artists and provide broader exposure for their
work. This can be done in a mutually beneficial way with existing
galleries and traditional organizations. However, the emphasis is on
empowerment to the artist.

The value to participating Sysops is in increased membership from a
new market segment - one that previously had no interest in BBS, or
computer technology. The Virtual Palette network also provides a pool
of talent that may be solicited for assistance in creating publicity
resources for the BBS such as brochures, video and audio spots, etc.

Another value, that may not be readily apparent, is the simple
enjoyment that artists can contribute with their creative and
aesthetic sensibilities. It could make Sysoping more interesting.

If you are a Sysop running PCBboard and using RoseMail as your
maildoor, please contact MIKE BUTLER@VIRTUAL PALETTE for information
about becoming a VPANET hub.

If you are an artist who would like access to VPANET, try to find a
local Sysop who is using PCBoard and RoseMail software (there are many
of them all over the world) and pass this message on to her or him.
