Ray,

My being correct, if correct, is short-lived, and should be,
some bright person has prbably already make me obsolete.

So I guess I can merely parrot what the smart ones have always
said: go to original sources, or as near as you can get, in
order to concoct your own view of history -- for engineering or
anything else.

While it only partially covered your area of interest, one
dog-eared book I've used for years is:

The Ancient Engineers, L. Sprague de Camp, MIT Press, SBN
262 54008 8 (Paper).

Sorry, but I don't have here the amazing range of books and
documents of the repositories I have used.

Here, for history of industry and engineering, I delved into
the libraries at Columbia's Avery, Engineering, Business,
Science, Math, Biology, and the main Butler. The New York
Historical Society, Museum of the City of New York, New York
Public Library, and a host of specialty libraries, all had tons
of material on European and US industrial growth. You may find
the same out there.

Hey, can you not access our to libraries here by Telnet? I
regularly research material from archives around the world by
my trusty theft machine. Telnet and WWW are favorite tools.

About the best thing of NYC is its great libraries at Columbia
and other insitutions, New York Public Library, the various
historical societies. I got lucky in my youth here to spend a
lot of time in them and the dustiest of their archives.
Changed my world view, changed the world for me.

Please tell us what you find. Brian and others are on a tear.
