School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture.

The College of Arts and Architecture at The Pennsylvania State Univeristy
[Penn State] has established an new
School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. It is in its very early
stages of development. Currently, it is an administrative designation
without much function. This school was the brainchild of the present dean
of the college. He is a landscape architect.

The amazing thing about being here almost 25 years in the College of Arts
and Architecture is that it fails to function as an integrated whole. It
fails to function as a place where art enriches architecture. It, too, is
an administrative designation without much function.

However, the new school provides an opportunity for those who would see a
reasonable connection between the two professions. It could affect hiring
and tenure and promotion decisions in the future. For example, those with
degrees in both professions, or at lease some experience in both
professions, might be of value to the scheme.

My experience with the College of A and A has been that there could have
been a wonderful connection between the arts and architecture---if it had
not just been an administrative function. It just never happened.

Any thoughts?
