-----------------------------------------------

This document outlines the international design competition
organized in conjunction with the RAIC Architecture Festival which
will be held in Montreal from June 19 to June 21 1997.

This is a open design competition of ideas, in one phase, which follows the
competition guidelines of the Quebec Order of Architects (OAQ) and which,
in addition, has been approved by the OAQ's Competition Committee.

Objectives of the Event
---------------------------------

- Bring to light the potential of a site which is a major anchor and to
transform it into an urban place;
- Reunite architects around a typical problematic of contemporary
cities;
- Generate a debate on ways to make a place for architecture in
society;
- Focus on the importance of architecture with respect to heritage;
- Promote Montreal, its morphology, history and culture;
- Underline the diversity of fields of practice in architecture.

Themes
-----------

The Places
A reflection on the sites that make up a city ...
and make a place for architecture in society.

The Thresholds
A study of transitional places ...
of the bridge between architecture and society.

The Threshold as a Place of Architecture.

Site
------
The competition revolves around the consolidation of Montreal's
historic axis, St-Lawrence Boulevard, which divides the city into its East
and West sections, and the focal point where this axis manifests itself as
an architectural object: the bridge over the Ville-Marie Expressway, tying
Old Montreal to the contemporary metropolis. On that particular site
between Time and Space, it is proposed to make The Place of
Architecture.
