MADRID, Spain (AP) -- The Basque separatists who planned to attack the new
Guggenheim Museum during its opening this weekend were prepared to blow up
12 grenades during ceremonies attended by the king, authorities said Wednesday.
A Basque police officer foiled the alleged attack in northern Spain on
Monday when he stopped two men from entering the museum grounds in a van
loaded with grenades and machine guns hidden in flower pots. One of the men
shot Officer Jose Maria Aguirre, who died Tuesday.
