fees

Ohhhhhhh! Design takes time, and it sounds like you've bought into the
concept that design is an assembly line production process.
Unfortunately, our "New World" culture has engrained in us that to be a
*useful* member of society we must *produce* more to be *better*. What
crap! The consumption mentality of capitalism must be held at bay for at
least that which we all consider a bit sacred. Regarding "half the time
for half the fee," designers are already pushed to the limit for fees for
their work, so why would anyone want to produce as much, twice as fast,
for half the money? I have a project now which is a 1500 sq. ft house
which must be produced for $150,000.00 or less. The client is asking the
house to do more than their budget will allow, and we are asking too much
of the program to make it possible to come under the budget. It took time
to figure that out and it will take time for the client to understand
this, but we have budget for the design of the project too, and I've
already spent my 20% of it for schematic design and am already tapping
into the design development budget for the requisite funds to complete
the phase. So, to answer the question of "how do we deliver a better
building in half the time for half the fee?" The answer is - you can't.
