Archival Spaces
Deadline: October 31, 1999
Guest Editor: Greg Elmer, University of Massachusetts Amherst
This issue is a response to the lack of collections that address the
spatial, political and cultural implications of new trends in archival
practices. The goal of this project is thus threefold: first, to
engage, on a theoretical level, with the archival strands in cultural
theory forwarded by the likes of Innis (The Bias Of Communication),
Derrida (Archive Fever: A Freudian Impression), Foucault (The
Archaeology of Knowledge), Benjamin ("arcades") and Gilles Deleuze
(Foucault). Second, to provide a critical, spatial perspective on the
increasingly digitized and "wired" (on-line or though other networked
means) sites of classification and storage. And third, to reflect upon
the role that archives (libraries, universities and other centres of
knowledge) play in the transformation of virtual, architectural, urban
and geographical spaces.
Potential topics for the special issue include:
- emerging digital archives
- archives and privacy
- internet search engines and databases
- archival possibilities/limitations in cyberspace
- archival technologies (robots, spiders, intelligent agents, etc.)
- architectures and archives
- the (re)location of archives
- archival networks
- archives, classificatory systems and the production of knowledge
- archives and cities
- the corporatization and privatization of archives/information
- archives and displays (museums, exhibitions, etc.)
Submissions should be addressed to Greg Elmer/CO Space and Culture, Box
797 Stn. B Ottawa, Canada K1P 5P8. For more information contact Greg
Elmer (gelmer@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx) or Rob Shields (rshields@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx).
Articles submitted to Space and Culture are refereed and are
considered for publication on the understanding that they are not
under consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts should be submitted in
triplicate with a short abstract (100 - 150 words) and 7 keywords to
the address below. An additional diskette version would be greatly
appreciated. All submissions should be double spaced and in Harvard
Style format. A submission style guide can be retrieved in Rich Text
Format and MS Word for Windows v.6. Submissions need not be limited
to the particular theme of each issue. All manuscripts that meet with
Space and Culture's mandate will be considered for publication.
Couriers do not deliver to post office boxes. If you do need to send
your submission by courier, contact Space and Culture in advance to
arrange an alternate delivery point.
