i worked down the street from this building 1982 through 1985, when it was
still a working department store. we would sometimes go into the main hall
under the tower at lunchtime and marvel at the art deco detailing. a
wonderful, exuberant building, and a landmark on Wilshire Boulevard.

note that the restoration of the building in the late 90's DOES in fact have an
architect -- not noted in this posting, or in the southwestern website. it is
Altoon and Porter, who also worked at Charles Kober Associates, down the street
from Bullocks Wilshire in the mid-eighties (they formed their own office
shortly thereafter, and set it up originally in an old Julia Morgan-designed
building on 6th Street), are now a large office:
