This is a little off the Subject of this article, but. . .

Though limited in its scope, it combines a multi-disciplined effort amongst academic researchers. It is of value in this regard. However, the combination of such researchers based on a need to know approach about a specific problem would be a more comprehensive approach to research-learning-problem solving. The orientation towards science without a balancing concern for art is disturbing. And, the means for the collaboration, the computer basis for the juncture of these disciplines is too limited. There are many other desirable media available for the exploration of these problems; and they are excluded. When the computer becomes the center of a unification of designers, then it can avoid actual physical involvement in physical media for such studies. If the center is primarily for GIS research, then it is reasonable. However, if the attitude of a limitation-to-CAD-approach---and science---is the carryover of such studies, then it can have a detrimental affect on any design results. It may not, but it might. Separating the human touch of people from their design products by machine processes may have the affect of removing humanity from their design results.

GeoPlan, the Geo-Facilities Planning and Information Research Center, was established in 1984 at the University of Florida's College of Design Construction and Planning as a response to the need for a teaching and research environment in Geographic Information Systems, or GIS.
Since its inception, GeoPlan has become a multidisciplinary GIS Laboratory. Faculty and Researchers from Planning, Landscape Architecture, Wildlife Ecology, Forestry, Botany and other departments utilize the lab's hardware and software to perform analyses and run models.

GeoPlan is managed by a diverse group of Researchers and Doctoral Students from many disciplines including geography, engineering, architecture, planning, mathematics, and computer science. Through assistantships on various projects, Graduate Students obtain practical work experience using state-of-the-art computer technology. These students are drawn from the many colleges and departments throughout the University.

The GeoPlan Center has the following software licenses available to University of Florida students and departments:

a.. 3D Analyst 1.0
b.. ArcCAD v.14
c.. ArcPress 2.0
d.. ArcView 3.2
e.. MapObjects 2.0

Most recently, GeoPlan Center has developed The Florida Conservation Atlas, a conglomeration of conservation-oriented spatial datasets that can be used in different scales of conservation planning. The atlas is also a compilation of material overviewing the history of conservation and conservation planning and programs in Florida. See http://www.geoplan.ufl.edu/projects/conatlas/index.html

GeoPlan also maintains a continuing education course. The purpose of the course is to teach planners, environmental scientists and other professionals how to use the Florida data available in the FGDL with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
