Orthographic conventions did not stabilize until well into the nineteenth
century in germany, but before that, many writers (including Schelling
and Hegel) used the Seyn spelling for the infinitive of 'to be' to
distinguish it from sein, the possessive adjective. Now, it has an
antiquated, somewhat pretensious resonance.
