Robert Scheetz used that scary word "fascism" the other day (a word
Heidegger himself never used) -- yes,
Heidegger was no stranger to the intellectual milieu peopled by George,
Schmitt, Junger. The Schlageter piece reflects this. Few pause to
consider how important this piece really is for understanding Heidegger's
thought. A pamphlet, a short political tract, quickly takes the place of
_Being and Time_, _Introduction to Metaphysics_, _Letter on Humanism_, _Origin
of the Work of Art_, _The Question of Being_, etc.etc.etc. Not only takes
the place but also sets the terms for interpreting these works. A
formidable scholarly machinery of accusation, innuendo, calumny and
pontification marches in and plows under the conditions of thinking,
turning Heraclitus into a primitive warmonger and Heidegger into a
fascist blatherskite.
