*India on the verge of massive urbanisation, says Maken*

*Centre all set to take on the challenge through the
Rs.100,000-crore JNNUR Mission*

NEW DELHI: Asserting that the infrastructure sector is
all set to witness a massive growth in the next few
years, Union Minister of State for Urban Development
Ajay Maken on Friday said India is on the verge of big
urbanisation that would account for about 1.14 billion
people, almost 75 per cent of the country's population
by 2021.

"Urbanisation of this magnitude would require
corresponding infrastructure development and huge
investment. The Union Government is all set to take on
this challenge through the Rs.100,000-crore Jawaharlal
Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) launched
by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in December last
year.

*In addition, the Government is looking at huge
investment from the private sector in close
partnership,''* said Mr.Maken at the inaugural session
of a seminar on "*JNNURM: Opportunities and Challenges
for Urban Development and PPP in Northern States''
organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry
here.*

*Elaborating on the huge scope for the private sector,
Mr. Maken said that apart from augmenting existing
urban centres, the next few years are going to witness
development of about 3,000 urban spaces requiring
investment in basic infrastructure like drinking
water, sewerage, transport, roads and power.* Dwelling
on the scope of investments in these sectors, the
Minister said that while of the existing population of
300 million people only 40 per cent and 74 per cent
had access to potable water and sewerage,
respectively, the magnitude of efforts needed in this
direction could well be imagined if the same was to be
provided to 1.4 billion people.

Mr. Maken said that by 2021 just to meet the water and
sewerage demands, an investment of about 38 billion
dollars was required while another 25 billion dollars
were planned to be spent on other infrastructure needs
through JNNURM. *He said such huge investment would not
be possible without private participation and exhorted
private players to come forward and invest in this
sector.*

*He made it clear that JNNURM was an extensive
result-oriented programme that had essentially tied up
devolution of funds with implementation of financially
sound and transparency driven reforms at the level of
the State Governments and urban local bodies. He urged
private players to come forward in partnership with
the Government.
