The book "American Houses" by Phillip Langdon has an excellent chapter on
the conversion of old buildings( churches, firehouses, industrial
buildings, parking garages and such). Chapter five of the book discusses
the three R's, restoration, rehabilitation and renovation. It has excellent
photos.
