Courtesy of This Old House: Why they're called "shotgun" houses. This is
relative to the New Orleans variety, where there is a common hall that
runs the full length of the house---from front door to back door. All
the rooms were off ths hall. The name supposedly stuck after someone
supposed they could fire a shotgun in the front door and the shot would
exit the back! Or maybe Steve Thomas' imagination is getting the best of
him.
I've never seen anything more substantial than that.
