Cybercafe is currently running a very active BBS with over 500 users 200
calls per week catering for the discussion / exhange of arts technology.
Cybercafe would like to make an information system accessible to the
computer illiterate:BBSs have one main disadvantge: you need and computer
and a modem to access them. For this reason we intend to create cybercafe
VMS.

Cybercafe Voice Mail System

Voice Mail Systems are normally an annoyance to the caller. we aim to
reverse this and take this technology and adapt it for cultural purposes.

Cybercafe VMS would be accessible from phoneboxes/ mobile phones/ home /
work. Cybercafe VMS would provide mail boxes for individuals/groups and
diseminate music / poetry / performance / announcements / art projetcs

We draw inspiration and experience from: Mr Apology

Mr Apology (New York)

4 lines in over 700 calls per week

People ring in and confess / apologize for things they have done
and more interestingly explain why they did it in the first place.
They then have the chance to listen to the best recent confessions

I plan to do something similar, but considering that we live in a society
based on protesting and denial (protestant as opposed to catholic), ours
would be called Mr Denial (or something similar). People would call in and
deny acts / thoughts out of hand and rant on about the reasons why they
would never do these things. e,g, vegetarians could state that they don't
eat meat and give the reasons why. Callers could then opt to hear why other
callers deprive themselves of pleasure and vitamins to be closer to good
than other people.

This systems would be the first such system in the U.K., would attract
considerable media interest and more importantly be fun.

People will be charged at normal phone rates

System Requirements:
Macintosh, One phone line, One VMS Modem.

Cybercafe aims to promote/ceate spaces/situations in which
people can create/behave/express/experience
in ways unavailable in currently existing places

Domains of activity radio/tv/telephones/fax/
mailart/flyposting/performance/computer.

Please get in contact if you would like to give us money or help publicise
this project.

Thank you for your consideration
