ANNOUNCEMENT: @art gallery opens

http://gertrude.art.uiuc.edu/@art/gallery.html
----------------------------------

The collaborative group ad319 announces the opening of @art , a virtual
internet gallery.

@art gallery is committed to exhibiting the best in contemporary electronic
art. Individual artists will be showcased on a revolving basis, with each
exhibition lasting six to eight weeks.

The current exhibition is titled "Grayscale Fields", and features recent
images by Peter Campus. Mr. Campus, an internationally recognized visual
artist based in New York City, has been working with a variety of
electronic media since the 1970's. He is represented by the Paula Cooper
Gallery in New York. The Paula Cooper Gallery can be contacted at
212.674.0766. The exhibition will run until November 14.

At the end of each exhibition, the artists' work will be archived and will
remain retrievable.

>From November 15 to January 14, @art gallery will feature the work of the
California-based visual artist Carol Flax. Ms. Flax work has been included
in several prestigious exhibitions recently, including the "New Iterations"
show at the International Center for Photography, New York.

Additional exhibitions will be announced in the coming months.

@art gallery is housed in Gertrude, an IBM RS6000 that has been configured
as a WWW server. It's physical location is the School of Art & Design,
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. The gallery is designed
to be viewed on a Macintosh, utilizing a Mosaic interface. Although the
gallery can be viewed with other WWW clients, and on other platforms,
viewing on a Mac with Mosaic will most closely approximate the original
design. Please be patient in this early phase of the gallery's existence,
and allow us a little time to work out some of the kinks.

ad319 is an interdisciplinary collaborative group comprised of Kathleen
Chmelewski, Nan Goggin, and Joseph Squier. All three are practicing
artists, and faculty members at the School of Art & Design, University of
Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA. The group was formed to address issues
we face as contemporary artists and educators working in new imaging and
communication technologies.

@art gallery is based on the premise that, today, computer art doesn't
necessarily require physical form. Increasingly, digital artists are
taking advantage of the inherent characteristics of the technology. Of
particular interest to us is the ability to electronically distribute still
images, video, text, and sound. This dramatically alters our understanding
of art as object.

The gallery will evolve with time, due in part to your feedback. We invite
you to share your ideas with us.

Feel free to forward this announcement.
