Re: Cynical view of Decon!

Oh, Ray, we aren't whining---WE'RE SHOUTING! Actually just having some fun
with language.

I think I'm an "anti-ism" designer, but my projects haven't yet gelled into
something I could call by a readily applied handle. And I really don't care
if they never do. I believe that the client, site/ context, program all will
tell me everything I need to make an architecture that will meet my
previously-mentioned Vitruvian Acid Test. We need to understand people and the
natural environment, along with all the gnarley details like heating systems
much more than we need to understand a canon or a theory that is based in
some completely arbitrary fabrication.

Corbu's Five Points were arbitrary choices. The decision to link the design of
habitable structures to a theory of literary criticism was an arbitrary one.
The Vitruvian Acid Test, and my decision to apply it, is also arbitrary, but
I'm willing to bet a nickle or two that I can get it to remain relevant long
after the critics and theorists have left Derrida on the roadside, beaten
and robbed.
