". . .Kings of Kush
The high point of the history of Ancient Sudan occurred under the exotically named Kingdom of Kush, which at one point conquered Egypt. The pharaohs of the 25th Egyptian Dynasty (747 B.C. to 656 B.C.) came from Sudan.

Kushite art and architecture were similar to the Egyptian variety, though also subtly different. The kings of Kush were buried in pyramids. These were smaller than the ones at Giza, though still stunning in the photographs on show. The Kushite gods looked like Egyptian deities, yet had different names and quite possibly different characters and requirements.

No one knows about those last points because Kushite inscriptions, though written in Egyptian hieroglyphs and well- preserved, have never been deciphered. The Kushites themselves are enigmatic. The king whose copper-bronze statuette is the poster image of the show looks softer-faced and less formidably stern than his Egyptian equivalents. He appears almost gentle. . ."

Ancient Nubia: Egypt's Rival in Africa

The ancient land of Nubia was a neighbor to Egypt. It occupied the banks of the Nile River south of Aswan, all the way to the sixth cataract, or falls. Today this land lies inside of Sudan, but in ancient days it was known as the Kingdom of Kush and even ruled over Egypt for a time!

"The first great African civilization developed in the northern Nile Valley was in about 5000BC. Dependent on agriculture, this state, called Egypt, relied on the flooding of the Nile for irrigation and new soils. It dominated vast areas of northeastern Africa for millennia. Ruled by Egypt for about 1800 years, the Kush region of northern Sudan subjugated Egypt in the 8th century BC. Pyramids, temples, and other monuments of these civilizations blanketed the river valley in Egypt and northern Sudan."
