npr did a documentary last week on leonard bernstein that included interviews with his daughter jamie. she said bernstein's 'demise' was that he couldn't/wouldn't succumb to the cynicism around him in the early 1970s. when he described his 1976 score for "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" as a 'serious' work, jamie said she knew the show was 'doomed'.

the cynicism that began with the vietnam war has now encapsulated us in one of those pink plastic bubbles, so sticky you don't want to touch its membrane. but remember what happens when they collapse?
