Another thing:

Would it be possible to rigidly experience the givenness of the other
as evil from its givenness as mysterious, as awesome or (appropriately)
awe-ful? Does the latter presuppose a certain power of the other over
us, as is the case in e.g religion, where the glory of God or the gods
is part and parcel of his/their ruthlessness and ability to destroy
the things of which human life is composed (God may be just, but He
is also vengeful).

Maybe I'm taking this in the direction of the Kantian Erhabene?
