Who wants to criticize Nietzsche for uprooting the
old values and affirming power as the new principle,
would have to look at Descartes first. One cannot
affirm the subjectivity in one, and reject the same
in the other.
(of course, criticism is out of place here, because
these are thinkers taking responsibility for the whole.
Only criticism regarding the whole (root) of metaphysics
get in touch with it)
On doubt, as the necessary counterweight and ingredient
of certitude and liberation: Ernst Cassirer, in the
foreword to the Meiner edition of Descartes' works:
"Doubt isolates the thinking subject, in order to free
it by virtue of this isolation."
and, reminding of Heidegger's notion of tone and change
of tone, as the decisive in the change of truth akin to
successive metaphysical homepositions :
"...as many encounters may be found between medieval and
cartesian thought, what changes is the overall accent
of knowledge, when we go from one to the other."
