Mumbai, Dec 4. (PTI): The country's buoyant construction sector, which is on
the threshold of an unprecedented boom, will throw up immense employment
opportunities during the 11th five year plan period starting next year.

"The construction industry alone will create more than 17 lakh employment
opportunities during the 11th plan period," Rajeeva Ratna Shah,
Member-Secretary, Planning Commission, told PTI here.

"The Planning Commission estimates seven million job opportunities during
the 11th plan period and atleast a good 20 to 25 per cent of that will
emanate from the construction sector alone," Shah said.

The country would require investments to the tune of $ 320 billion over a
period of five to seven years to meet the demands of this sector, he added.

Shah also emphasised the criticality of forging Public-Private Partnerships
(PPPs) in the infrastructure sector, saying that "they hold the key for
achieving our goals."

"India needs atleast $ 100 billion investment in the power generation sector
and a similar amount of investment in the power transmission sector," he
said.

Further investments to the tune of $ 30 billion in ports, $ 10 billion for
airports and $ 50 billion would be needed to implement different projects
under the National Urban Renewal Mission and the rest for roads and Bharat
Nirman projects, he said.

Highlighting the tremendous development occurring across sectors, Shah cited
the increasing purchasing power of the people as fuelling consumption in the
country.

"The construction industry is poised for a high- trajectory growth that it
itself as yet does not anticipate," he said.

Making an obvious comparison with China, Shah said the communist country is
ahead of us by at least 10 years.

Meanwhile, Shah is not pleased with the lack of creative activities in the
construction sector that could be dubbed as `landmarks'.

"So far, India has not seen the best creative part of the construction
activity. They need to go outside and see landmarks, which is fascinating,"
he said.

To plug this gap, he said the construction industry should encourage
'imagineering'.

"Original minds think differently. The construction industry should
encourage the creative mind to think differently and give them the full
freedom," he said.
