Initial conference paper on VR - VENEZUELA

Just a brief note to inform on the paper presented at the
Iberoamerican Congress on Education and Informatics, held at
Caracas, Oct. 19-23, 1992. The title of the paper was :

" Virtual Reality, Anticipation and Design "

by Gonzalo Velez, Gustavo Llavaneras and Dario Alvarez

A brief overview of VR was presented, its potential
benefits, hazzards and impact to future education activities
in the iberoamerican context, relevant references to VR
current activities in more developed countries and incipient
research activities (yet without the proper hardware) at the
Laboratory for Advanced Techniques in Design, School of
Architecture, Universidad Central de Venezuela at Caracas,
where the first two authors conduct academic activities
(Professor Llavaneras is currently pursuing doctorate studies
at Berkeley), while architect Alvarez acts as an external
collaborator to the Lab.

The paper emphasizes subject of VR as a tool for
anticipating architectural design decisions and stresses its
potentialities as such. After final reflections on the
importance of an early start regarding the awareness of VR
application progress in various areas, the authors recommend
prompt initiation of studies leading, eventually, to the
creation of an Iberoamerican Research Center on VR
Applications to Education.

In the context of a highly emphasized multi/hypermedia
agenda, the aforementioned paper is assumed to be the first,
locally, to give consideration to the VR subject as related
to architectural education.
