Re: GENERAL: 3-D Sound

Anyone interested in 3-D sound (binaural) (NOT STERIO!)
should look into some of the work that has spun out of
NASA Ames and other places in the last few years.

Dr Elizabeth Wendell (SP?) is head of the Ames team.

It has spun off one company - Crystal River Engineering
(CEO - Scott Fisher).

Other groups include the Japanese BioTech and several
of the traditional audio companies are getting on board.

Put simply - sound is digitally post-processed using a
program that simulates different architectural spaces
and acoustic radiosity. Also some systems use digital
filters that have been made by simulating the geometry
of the ear canal of people with very good spacial
differentiation.

It's mindboggling - you actually believe you are in the
space being simulated. Developed for Virtual Reality it's
now getting used in a variety of applications including
stress reduction.

Michael Jackson used the technology on his last album -
some of the track intro's. Listen to the CD (not tape)
with a headset on.
