Northern Rim Project
Mission Statement

The Northern Rim Project (NRP) has been established to
enable researchers in Hokkaido, Scandinavia, and North
America to communicate and cooperate. The project
focuses on sharing information to develop sustainable
winter lifestyles, communities, economic activities and
environments. The project will connect researchers to
information through a computer-based electronic
network.

NRP's North American office has been in operation at the
University of Montana (USA) since July 1992. Our
Hokkaido office is currently in development, and a
Scandinavian office will be established later this year in
Oslo, Norway.

We invite participation from all interested researchers
and representatives of professional community and
enviromental organizations, governmental agencies,
academic institutions and busines enterprises. We
intentd not to compete with existing organizations with
a Northern Region focus. Rather, we intend to
complement such activities by providing an open network
environment in which to develop an access map of
information sources. The key to this project will be
creating "user friendly" tools for research using
electronic databases and other information sources.

The Northern Rim Project is affiliated with the
International Ecodevelopment Institute (IEI), Sapporo,
Japan. IEI is a not-for-profit corporation established in
the public interest to further scientific and cultural
research and education. IEI programs focus on
sutainability and the social ecology of winter life in
Northern Bioregions.
