Addr: Censorship Query

My artist wife, Amy DeLap, is a very articulate speaker who has been
preparing for a panel discussion regarding censorship, censorship in
art and in the press. The only other panelist is a newspaper editor
who works for a conservative newspaper owned by Dan Quayle's brother,
which refused to print the Doonesberry cartoon, during Reagan's
presidential election. This editor has made very inflamitory remarks
about the NEA, art institutions and artists in general, all in the
guise of speaking in defense of down home family values and the little guy.

Because of this person's previous editorial work and the frequent overlap
of art and the press, we are anticipating this editor to make very abrasive
comments about art, artists and art instutions and possible debate afterwards.

I am calling for all comments you might have to offer regarding censorship.
Have you had similar public debates? What topics dominated? What were the
outcomes? Do you have any advise or strategy to share? Do you have personal
points of view, either pro or con, toward artists in relation to censorship
issues? What are the landmark cases? What were their outcomes? What are
some of the underlying agendas related to the issue of censorship? Why has
it become a problem now?

I encourage you to respond, please, either through the list or to
my personal address, ajendrze@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx. --Andy
