Online art galleries

I'm an artist/computing student here in Vancouver, and
I've been given an asssignment in a telecomputing course to use the Internet
to do a research project of my choice. My choice is to find out everything I
can about the online galleries available - what's in them, how they're run,
how they started, tips and tricks for using this resource.

I don't believe that any of the other students in my class have the slightest
idea that such things exist, and I'm quite new to them myself. It's a pretty
exciting project for that reason. I hope to light a fire under them, and
maybe
get the word out to the wider art/computing community here.

Could someone on ARTCRIT send me more information regarding online art
galleries? Their names, e-mail addresses for contact persons, whatever anyone
knows in this area. Thanks!
